June 12, 1986: Semi-automated DNA Sequencing Technique with Fluorescence Detection

A research team at the California Institute of Technology developed a method for the partial automation of DNA sequence analysis using fluorescence labeling. The method was published in Nature in June 12, 1986. Labeling each nucleobase, the base A, T, C, and G, with different colors of fluorescence allows scientists to sort DNA fragments more easily and further accelerated the development of DNA sequencing technology.
