The BioTaiwan 2018 Conference and Exhibition hosted by the Taiwan Bio Industry Organization (Taiwan BIO) opened on July 18 in Taipei, and will last for five days intending to foster cooperation in the global biotechnology community.

This year, the 16th annual meeting attracts over 25 biotech and pharmaceutical companies from Asian, Asia-Pacific, North American, and European countries, and is one of the largest gatherings of its kind in Asia. The meeting consists of five major events, including BioBusiness Asia (BBA) conference for investment, conference on Greater China and Asia-Pacific opportunities, company presentations and one-on-one partnering, seminars, workshops and exhibition. More than 600 businesses with over 1,400 booths attend the exhibition.

With a total of 9 sessions, the BBA conference covers topics from global development, to technologies and healthcare applications, to intelligent precision medicine, to biotech startup and investment, and to advanced biotherapies.

In the Plenary Session of the BBA conference, Mr. Joseph Damond, Executive Vice President for International Affairs at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), talked about the global policies and strategies in biotechnology industry. Mr. Damond noted that biotech businesses around the world should work together in order to thrive as one in this rapidly evolving era. Recognizing that Taiwan’s biotech industry has a strong foundation of talented people and high quality research capacity, Mr. Damond encouraged the nation to expand international connection and innovative development in order to shine on the biotech stage.

The organizer also invited Sir Richard J. Roberts, Winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, to talk about impact of genetic engineering on modern society and economy. Although Dr. Roberts was inconvenient to turn out due to personal reasons, a video of Dr. Roberts discussing the future of biotechnology and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from an aspect of humanity was shown to raise the importance of science-based policy.
