The whole genome sequence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was completed and published in the journal Nature in June 11, 1998. The M. tuberculosis has approximately 4,400,000-base-pair containing nearly 4,000 genes. In light of the prevalence of tuberculosis infection around the world and an increase in its resistance to antibiotics, scientists worked together to unravel the genome sequence of this pathogenic bacteria hoping to help develop better anti-tuberculosis treatments and more effective vaccines.
