American geneticist and molecular biologist Phillip Allen Sharp (June 6, 1944 – present) co-discovered that genes in eukaryotes contain introns instead of being contiguous strings. Dr. Sharpalso found that the splicing of messenger RNA (mRNA) can occur in multiple different ways further translating into different proteins from the same DNA sequence. Sharp shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Richard J. Roberts for their aforementioned works.
