May 28, 2003: The World’s First Cloned Horse Born

The world’s first cloned horse, Prometea, was born via natural delivery in Laboratory of Reproductive Technology, Cremona, Italy, on May 28, 2003). Prometa, the first cloned horse, is a female Haflinger foal and also the first horse to be born from and carried by its cloning mother. Prometea was the only viable and successfully developed embryos out of 841 embryos created by the research team, and brought to nine the number of mammalian species that scientists have cloned from mature cells, along with sheep, mice, rabbits, goats, cats, pigs, cattle, and mules.
