May 8, 1902: French Microbiologist André Michel Lwoff Was Born

Microbiologist André Michel Lwoff (May 8, 1902 – September 30, 1994) discovered the genetic regulatory mechanisms of certain viruses when they infect bacteria. Lwoff and other collaborators fouond that the viral genes and genetic material can embed in bacteria after infection and express the viral genes to regulate bacterial gene expression under certain circumstances. This finding helps to understand how transcription is performed in bacteria. Lwoff, François Jacob and Jacques Monod jointly won the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this research.
