Motoo Kimura (November 13, 1924 – Nomvember 13, 1994) was a Japanese evolutionary biologist best know for developing the theory of genetic drift, and was influential among the theoretical population geneticists. He believed that the stratified evolution in genetic sequence is due to genetic drift instead of natural selection, and proposed the neutral theory of molecular evolution in which genetic drift is the main force changing allele frequencies. The neutral theory of molecular evolution introduced by Kimura in 1968 was recognized as a materwork next to On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin.
