美國生物學家 Norton David Zinder（1928 年 11 月 07 日 – 2012 年 02 月 03 日）在沙門氏桿菌（Salmonella）的研究中發現噬菌體可將細菌基因從一隻細菌帶入另一隻細菌，進而達到基因重組。Zinder 教授將此過程命名為轉導 (transduction)，而轉導後來也成為基因研究和基因工程不可或缺的關鍵技術。1966 年，獲頒美國國家科學院分子生物學的 National Academy of Sciences（NAS）獎。
