基因组定序为人类基因体计画（The Human Genome Project, HGP）的重大目标。2000 年 10 月 07 日，美国国家人类基因体研究中心 (NHGRI) 公布人类基因体的基因图谱和初步定序结果（working draft sequences），人类基因体定序工作因此进入一崭新阶段，正式宣告世界进入后基因体时代。
